DESCRIPTION
OLR.PL, the offline reader for the DCForum-based FlightAdventures forum requires, at the minimum, two distribution files to be installed:

VPCOLR_Perl.EXE

VPCOLR_MySQL.EXE

Although you can read messages with just those two files, we recommend the convenience of the FlightAdventures Virtual Pilot Center™ OffLine Reader (VPCOLR), which will add a graphical front end/interface for Windows® platforms. This third file is optional, but it will greatly enhance the ease of reading, replying to, and searching for messages.

INSTALL NOTES

New Installations

1. Install VPCOLR_Perl.exe, vpc_olr.exe, and VPCOLR_MySQL.exe in any order. If you have the room (>20 megs free) we recommend installing to the default folders on drive C:.

2. Start VPCOLR. (Win NT, 2000, and XP users, please see the additional instructions below.)

3. You'll be greeted by a configuration screen. Fill in your message board username and password. (If you haven't already registered a account, please visit the VPC message board and do so now.) If you installed Perl or MySQL to another drive other than C:, point the configuration boxes to the drive and folder(s).

4. If you've registered your copy of VPCOLR (a complimentary registration key is a VPC Crew membership benefit), you can enter the registration key by starting VPCOLR and selecting Help: Registration. Remember that your registration information is case sensitive.

5. Update VPC OLR to the latest version by shutting down VPCOLR, then installing VPCOLR21upgrade.exe and OLR183-setup.exe.

Installation Tips

If you are a VPC Crew member, right click on VPC Crew Area forum on the VPC Forums list and select Forum Properties. In the Minimum Download Date, insert a recent date such as 5/22/02. This will reduce your first download time since you'll only download message from this Forum since that date. Although you may be on a broadband connection, downloading large numbers of messages can literally take hours.

If you're on a broadband connection, you can disable the Disconnect reminder by started VPCOLR and selecting Options and removing the check from Disconnect Reminder.

Disabling the Auto Mark Read option may help you keep track of threads you've read and/or want to read. To disable the Auto Mark Read feature, after the OLR starts, go to Options and remove the check mark from Auto Mark Read. Now after reading each thread or forum, you can click the respective Mark Forum or Mark Thread read button.

Windows NT, 2000, and XP
Windows NT, 2000, and XP require MySQL to be started as a service.

C:\mysql\bin\mysqld-nt.exe --install

2. Next, go to Control Panel: Administrative tools : Services and scroll down until you see the MySQL entry and double click on it.

3. Set the startup type to Automatic, and start the service (if it's not).

Now everytime you reboot your computer MySQL will start automatically in the background.

Proxy Server Instructions
If you access the Internet via a Proxy Server, you'll need to add a proxy server to the olr.ini file. This may also be required if the OLR is not saving your proxy settings during the first setup:

1. Open folder "C:\Program Files\FlightAdventures\VPC_OLR\"
2. Open file OLR.INI with notepad
3. Add/Ammend the following line at the end of the file;

proxy=http://yourproxyhere.domain.com:1080

OR (to remove proxy)

proxy=none
