> I'm glad to help out in any way I can.Thank you, Chip! We all appreciate you being here.
Folks, Chip is a well-respected A&P (Airframe and Powerplant) mechanic. So if you've got questions about the how's and why's aircraft work the way they do (even over and above maintenance issues), he's VERY knowledgeable.
Thanks again, Chip!

(formerly DaveH on old site!)Great! Glad to see you made the jump successfulley. First question; What are the symptoms of a cracked cylinder and/or a stuck valve (NO, its NOT on our C150H, my CFI's Mooney again!)
It really acted up. After it sat a few days it ran fine on the ground. A local mechanic thinks its a stuck valve. Wouldn't that be consistent, or would it come and go. My CFI wonders if its a cracked cylinder, but again wouldn't that be a consistent issue??
They are going to try and run it on the ground and see if they can get it to act up and figure out which cylinder.

Hi Dave, Still have that pesky intermitt roughness I see. The best way to troubleshoot a stuck valve/cracked cylinder is to do a borescope inspection. Pay close attention to the small area between the 2 valves. This problem usually does not rear it's ugly head until the engine gets to full operating temp. Sometimes you can find the problem with a compression check or checking the valves with the covers off may lend a possible defect. But the scope is usually the best.
Good Luck,
Chip

(formerly DaveH on old site!)They plan to fly in the pattern to see if they can get it to do it, land and check it out while its acting up. I guess risk in tolerable, but I am not going to volunteer to ride shotgun!!!

It depends on how many cylinders you have to start with. A couple of months ago I was on an IFR flight with a student and lost a cylinder in a 182. My remarks about it afterwards was a 182 running on 5 cylinders is still better than a 152 on all 4!

(formerly DaveH on old site!)I was flying it (with my CFI) the third time it did it (after again being proclaimed healthy by a shop that "fixed" it). It started as a perceptable vibration in the yoke to suddenly back firing and vibrating to the point I initially thought I had chucked part of a propeller.
George fiddled with the prop/mixture and got it down do a reasonable level (though still back firing loudly) while I scooted for the airport.
Last time it did it, it barely made enough power to climb at all. Its a 4 cylinder Mooney M20E.

Glad you guys made it back on the ground ok. You know that old saying, fool me once...
(I was going to change the subject line for this message, but somehow it still seems appropriate.)

It also sounds a little like a clogging fuel nozzle.......
But valve still sounds most likely. I have tried the Avblend in a few engines with good results. See if the guy is doing frequent oil changes or not. Dirty oil will cling in the guides and act like sand paper wearing it and causing a build up which makes it stick occassionally.....
Just some food for thought. What kind of time is on the engine/cylinders?Chip

(formerly DaveH on old site!)Its really quite baffling. He had bought it and flown it awhile when one time he and his wife were out and it first acted up. The landed at a nearby airport, and the mechanic didn't find anything. The had dinner, and when they checked it to leave it ran fine. A trip or so later it did it flying over Tenessee. They left it there while they flew commercial to Florida. The shop there cleaned all the injectors. It ran fine for several flights until it did it with me and George. That time they replaced a right mag and plugs. Flew OK until the last time when George and our other C150H partner were out and it really acted up.
After its sat for a few days, it runs fine. Last weekend they ran it 20 minutes on the ground to get it hot, and it ran fine!!!
As you can imagine he is quite frustrated with it!!

Hi Chip -As always, I'm a 'day late and a dollar short' but let me jump in here and welcome you to the site. And we do welcome your expertise (as long as you don't charge too much for your consults:)
> This Site is Awesome,
You got that right! Ben and his crew have done a marvelous job on this place and there is more to discover every day. They have simplified multi-player flight simming to the ultimate. It is even enjoyable now <]:¬)
Anyway - welcome to the field, just pull up a chair and sit a spell - coffee's just around the corner there next to the DUATS terminal......
Cheers,
