"VPC Chat link problems?"
Posted by Ben Chiu on 04-27-01 at 09:17z
Greetings! It seems that the link to the Chat is a bit spotty. Can every please test the VPC chat link?
Please let us know in this thread if it:
A) Opens the Chat Info window
B) Starts MSChat automatically
C) Automatically connects to the VPC server
D) Automatically enter the chat room for you
E) What browser and version you're using -- please enter the whole number (e.g. 5.00.2919.6307IC)
It Chat link should do all of the above for you. If it doesn't we want to try and fix that if we can. However, I'm beginning to think that it's a browser issue and not something we can fix on this end.
Thank you!
Ben

When I click the Pilot Lounge Chat Info link here are the results:
A) Opens the Chat Info window - YES
B) Starts MSChat automatically - NO
C) Automatically connects to the VPC server - NO
D) Automatically enter the chat room for you - NO
E) IE Version 5.00.2919.6307IS
Other info: When I click the link I get an IE window in addition to the Chat Info window, the second IE window states that there's an invalid syntax error.

Actually that IE error sounds like you don't have MSChat installed (or installed incorrectly). Please try searching your registry as detailed in earlier in the other reply.
Joe found a temporary solution for other kinds of problems. I'll post the file in another message.

Greetings Again!
OK, here's something to try:
Please open regedit.exe (you'll need to open it from the Run box if you don't already have it in Accessories:System Tools) and search for "mic" (without the quotes). Be sure that your search Keys, Values, Data, and Match whole strings only boxes are checked.
Regedit should fild the two following entries:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mic\shell\open\command
H:\Program Files\Microsoft Chat\CChat.exe \"%1\"
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\mic\shell\open\command
H:\Program Files\Microsoft Chat\CChat.exe \"%1\"
(Of course the path to CChat.exe would reflect the location on your system, so once you see what your registry has, please verify that CChat is actually in that location.)
If you're having problems with Chat automatically opening, please post to this thread and let us know if you have the above entries in your registry, and whether it points in to the right folder.
Thank you!
Ben

I had a look and I found one of the entries.. when I realised that one was missing I reinstalled MSChat... only to discover I was installing MSChat2.0, so I've download MSChat2.5 from FA Downloads and now everything seems to be working!
Thanks!
-Stephen.

Have similar values. Both use short root folder name (PROGRA~1)
Coresponds to path in Windows Explorer association for Microsoft Chat Room Shortcut (extension .CCR). Clicking on a file of that type has opened the client and entered the room from the time I formated the C: drive until Microsoft closed their server down.

Greetings Robert:
Do me a favor and try chaning the reg keys to read "Program Files" and see what happens. Unless of course the folder that contains the MSChat folder is named "PROGA~1"
It should be very easy to change back and forth between the two, but please be sure to reboot between changes.
Thanks!

IE 3.0 preinstalled by PC manufacture
totally unsuccessful. I couldn’t even get the VPC to load using 3.0. java script was an issue. But I don’t think this will be a factor due to the fact microsoft.com had the same java script problem. It’s just a really old browser!

IE 4.0 (4.72.3110.8) clean install
using all 4 chat links in the VPC does connect to the server, it opens a Cchat 2.5 chat window but places me in room 1. Clicking on the room lists I can enter all the available rooms. Chat info window does pop up.

IE 5.0 (5.003314.2101) web upgraded from 4.0
all the links work except the having trouble connecting to the chat? Please try this link. It does find the server but does not stick me in the pilot lounge.

IE 5.5 (5.50.4522.1800)
clean install from microsoft.com/ie
From the NOTAMs pop up window, couch link, the text chat on the main page and chat pop up window I get a 5.5 browser with the address “mic://www.flightadventures.com/#Pilot_Lounge” and the chat info window pops up with me in room1.

Thanks for the awesome work, Craig!
It seems there is some change in the way that IE handles the pass off from 5.0 to 5.5. We'll have to dig around in the registry a bit more to see if we can fix this bug.
Thanks again, Craig!

Couch in VPC: Opens Chat Information and blank browser window with mic://www.flightadventures.com/#Pilot_Lounge in address text box.Text under VPC Image: Same
Joe's Shortcut: Opens Microsoft Chat client and connection dialog getting error about unable to connect to server.
Having Problems... link in Chat Info Window: Same as Joe's Shortcut
Manual Connection via IP address: Same as Joe's Shortcut. Same way that worked Thursday evening
Suspect last three due to chat server application not responding, did you or Tom have it offline for adjustments (around 1645-1715z)?
Will have to use a seperate post if you want those registry key values.
IE version 5.50.4522.1800

Yep, the Chat sever is offline for upgrades. (We're experimenting with Java-based solutions.) I suspect you're right, the last three test results were caused by no server being available to connect to. Thanks for the tests.
