"OLR Update Fails"

Posted by AlanParkinson on 04-30-02 at 20:56z
I've run the new OLR installer twice since receiving it early this morning. On both occasions, it's failed to overwrite the previous exe file, and left me with 3.0.3.5 beta 2. As Mike directed, I put it into the same folder as the previous installation - this is where it has put the install.log file, a copy of which I've sent to Mike.

Can I somehow extract the exe and manually place it in the appropriate folder?

If I can't get the installation to work, is my present version going to time out at midnight tonight (only two hours away)?

Help, I've become dependant on the OLR already.

Alan

Hi Alan:

It it not installing? Which folder are you trying to install into?

Perhaps your desktop shortcut is not being replaced. What happens if you use the menu item Start:Program Files:FlightAdventures:VPCOLR?

Hi Ben,

I am starting to get just a little frustrated now, this is my third attempt to send a reply to you, but they keep evaporating from the system, apparently not being sent and yet not available to edit whilst the main window says there are still messages waiting to be sent.

The installation has definitely gone astray. The first installation (3.0.3.5 Beta 2) was in c:\vpc. As advised by Mike, I pointed the installer to the same folder. A number of files in that folder have been updated by the installation, but not vpcolr.exe. There are two failures that I can spot in the install log file,

1) Version: Following file not copied.
File Overwrite: C:\VPC\VPCOLR.exe

2) Could not Self-Register: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VSPELL32.DLL

Install.log now shows both attempts to install RC1, with the same failures in each.

I've searched the whole drive, and can say fairly certainly that it's not installed the RC1 anywhere else.

Hi Alan:

It sounds like the install may not overwrite existing files. You might try Vic's suggestion. Until Tom can jump in here with perhaps some insights, I'm at a loss to suggest anything else.

Alan -

Since the beta version will expire 5/1 - delete it and try the install again and see if it puts the fresh copy in the old folder.

Hi Vic,

Could you clarify that a little, please.

Do you mean uninstall the beta and then install RC1 WITHOUT the beta, or uninstall and reinstall both?

Hi Vic and Ben

I deleted (actually renamed) the file VPCOLR.EXE, and ran the new installer again. Looks like that did the trick.

That's good news. I'll have to ask Tom whether the install will overwrite existing files. One thought that did come to mind is no installer can overwrite a file if it's being used/run. Did you happen to have the OLR running when you were trying to install the new version? If so, that would explain the error. If not, more research will need to be done.

I'm willing to bet that the installer checks the version number for the install and won't install V 1 when V 3 is present.

I'm sure Tom can fix it when he returns,

No, I made certain on each occasion that the OLR was not running, though I forgot to shut down the anti virus stuff first time round. I suspect Pete hit the nail on the head with his version number theory - several other files were successfully overwritten.

Even though the installations failed, the installer claimed successful completion.

I do still have one error message in the install.log file
Could not Self-Register: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VSPELL32.DLL

That may be because the file was never unregistered (you would have had to have done that manually). Regardless, I'll pass the info on to Tom.

Thanks for the report!

I noticed that nobody except you is using the correct new
version of OLR.PL. This might be due to only moving
vpcolr.exe from one installation directory to an older one.
Wouldn't it be better to remove the old installation and
use the one in the new directory? Please investigate.

Guido

Tom wasn't able to get to the other installs before he left for SJC. We also have version 1.1 of the OLR ready for Tom when he gets back.

If anyone is comfortable with manually installing the latest OLR.PL, you can get it here:

http://www.flightadventures.com/misc/files/olr-1.76.zip

To manually install:

Exit the OLR, unzip the file, and replace olr.pl in the c:/perl/bin folder.

I had exactly the same problem. In the end I ran the installation exe file and installed to a different folder, compared what files were different between the two and realised, as you later did, that the existing file vpcolr.exe was not being overwritten. I simply copied it across to my c:\vpc folder and overwrote the old one and that fixed it.

Ben, if you're reading this, FWIW I definitely did *not* have the vpcolr.exe file running when I ran the installer so something's amiss here with the installation program.

Thanks for the feedback. Tom's on his way to SJC for a week, but I'm sure Greenie can fill him in when they meet we'll be able to get an answer or we'll just have to wait until he returns.

BTW, did you get a registration key for this? Just FYI, to enter the registration code for the OLR, select Help: Register. Enter the information exactly as indicated in the key and you'll be all set.

Hope this helps!

Hi Paul,

That's good to hear (in the sense that I'm not alone and doing something totally stupid)

Because Mike had said to direct the installer to the same folder as the previous version, I assumed it would not install anywhere else, so didn't think to try that. I might have saved myself some time - fairly obvious idea really! Still, all's well that ends well.
