Hello,
V1 is loaded and running
Question : why does it says "UNREGISTERED" at the left top corner?
**** VPC OffLine Reader Version 1.0.0.0 ****

I've not got that, but mine says "Version 3.0.4.1 RC1" whereas yours seems to be:
**** VPC OffLine Reader Version 1.0.0.0 ****
Where did that come from? I downloaded RC1 on Saturday, and received Mike's RC1 and installed it last night, yet it still says 3.0.4.1. I don't get it?

Pete

At least you've managed to install the damned thing! I'm sitting here tearing my hair out - as you'll remember I had a full head of hair <G>

Hi Alan,

> tearing my hair out - as you'll remember I had a full head of hair <G>Well you (were?) a lucky man, I've no hair to tear out in such circumstances, so what can I do to vent frustration? Tear the dog's fur out instead, perhaps? <G>
I'm sorry, I don't know any secrets. I just ran the EXE and re-pointed it to where my VPC was already installed (for 3.0.3.5 Beta 2), and now it says 3.0.4.1 RC1. But most others seem to be on 1.0.0.0, or even 1.1.0.0, which seems like it should be much older but is presumably on a new numbering scheme.
I hope someone can solve your installation problem for you -- my confusion over version numbers can wait!
Regards.
Pete

Pete & Alan - Sorry for the confusion. The RC1 is/was the Release Candidate - it seemed fine so The actual release version was 1.0.0.0. Right after Tom got that version in the install package, Ben noticed a small buglet - therefore Release Version 1.1.0.0 is the CURRENT version. All the beta's and RC's will expire tomorrow - probably with the time difference, you have found this out <g>.
Alan, as to your install troubles, I hope Ben/Tom can work them out. Let us know what the problem is.
HTH,
Vic

Hi Vic,HELP HELP, please ... URGENT!

But I downloaded a version last Saturday, and installed it, and that got me up to 3.0.4.1 RC1. I've not seen RC1 before then.
Mike then sent another copy by Email attachment. I asked him about this before installing it, and he said it was identical to my Saturday's RC1. I noticed others had 1.0.0.0 so I tried Mike's attachment -- it came out exactly the same, another RC1.
Now I've had to backdate my PC to APRIL as this morning I got a curt message saying VPCOLR has EXPIRED!!!
> Right after Tom
> got that version in the install package
Which install package? Both Saturday's and the one Mike sent appear to be 3.0.4.1 RC1. How do I get the "Release Package"?

Yes, that's why it is now 1st APRIL here, again. So, how do I get version 1.1.0.0 please?
I don't understand how things could get into such a mess. The install program says everything was hunky dory (excepting the two pages of stuff telling me I need Perl when I already have it -- why does it not check?).
????

Pete

Regarding my problem upgrading from Version 3 of the OLR to Version 1:I looked into the VPC folder and noticed that the VPCOLR.EXE is dated
22/04/02, so it obviously isn't part of the update you sent, or else
something else is going wrong.
I also noticed an INSTALL.LOG.Looking briefly at it I see that it contains a record both of my Saturday download and the attachment Mike sent. The former seems to have succeeded (and it DID update me to RC1), but the latter, which Mike said was identical in any case, failed to replace the EXE, thus:
Version: Following file not copied.
File Overwrite: C:\VPC\VPCOLR.exe
I assumed this was because it was the same, but maybe it's some version
number check? If version 1.0.0.0 is supposed to be later than version
3.0.4.1 shouldn't it have a higher number?
The really BAD thing about all this, apart from an odd cock-up in version
numbering, is that the Installer itself never once said anything was
wrong -- though it did seem to spend two pages of text telling me about
PERL, which I would have thought it could check.
Anyway, seeing this, I tried a fresh install with the file Mike sent, but this time in a separate
folder, to see if I could get a later EXE. This worked. I copied the later EXE into my normal VPC folder, and hey presto, I'm on 1.0.0.0, I think.
Phew!
Now how do I update to 1.1.0.0? Now that the numbers will, presumably, remain in logical order and not go backwards, I assume this problem won't recur?
Regards,
Pete

Yup, I think you hit the nail on the head! That's where the installer is messing up. Tom will have to fix it when he gets back from his trip. We need an error trap and an option to force the overwrite. OR, Vic could number the release 4 and be done with it <g>. GREAT catch.

Pete - Glad you got it sorted out. Following the messages I agree with Mike that the problem is in the installer. Ben wanted the Release version to be 1.0. otherwise, I would have had it increment to the next build. Future builds will have to increase from 1 so, when Tom get's the installer squared away, it shouldn't be a problem.
BTW, I'm not positive but I believe all the stuff that displays about Perl is part of the GPL license scheme and has to be there.
Thanx for your patience,
Vic

OK, as you should have seen, I did eventually get the installation to work (at about 3:15 am)
Removing the old exe file from the folder, or renaming it, got around the problem. It seems that the installer could not overwrite that particular file, as noted in the install log. Strangely, it can and does overwrite four other files in the application's folder, and two in the windows folder.
There is still the message in the log saying
Could not Self-Register: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VSPELL32.DLL
I've not yet spotted any problems with the spelling checker, assuming that's what this file is.

You are correct. If there was a registration problem you would get an error message when the spell checker tried to load - so I assume the installer just tried to register the component w/o unregistering same.
We'll pass it on to Tom.
