"New Version FlyNow! and Flight Rooms updated"
Posted by Ben Chiu on 03-29-02 at 06:19z
Greetings! We've updated the Flight Rooms! If you've been using the any version of FlyNow!, please uninstall it (today's date is 03-29-02), it is no longer supported by the VPC.
When you join any Flight Room and click the Fly Now! button, you'll be prompted to download and install the latest version (which is 75% smaller than the previous version).
Some of the exciting changes we've made include:
1. This new version eliminate about six step that used to be required to connect to a multiplayer session.
2. This version is tied to the main VPC database, so you only need to log on once anywhere in the VPC and you'll be automatically recognized in all of the features the VPC offers (provided you accept the cookie).
3. This new version now supports joining flights in progress (as long as the original host remains in the session--a DirectX limitation--sorry).
4. We've retained our theoretical support of >256 players per flight (this is limited by the sim, not FlyNow!).
5. We've dedicated Flight Rooms for specific sims (but we have 3 rooms that'll still play any DirectX sim).
We'll be adding a new chat area (renamed "Terminal") for the Flight Rooms in the next few days so pilots can mingle before flights.
Please let us know if anyone has any problems.
We hope to see you in the skies soon!
Ben

The new version comes with a "read me" that says it will only work with FS2002 in room 15. Is this still correct? If so, those of us running any other version are 'out of the loop' until updates to accommodate other FS versions are released. Right? If so, should we be installing this latest version, or waiting until updates are ready to go?
If this version will not work with FS98, I'll have to withdraw my offer to help with the testing (another thread).

Jerry - I'm sure Ben will jump in here but the new FlyNow will work with any DirectPlay application. The requirement is the *room*. Flight Room 15 was/is dedicated to FS2k2. I assume Ben will set up other's to handle FS98, FS2000, etc. So hang onto the application until he tells you which room to use.

Rooms 7,8, and 9 are dedicated FS98 rooms (as indicted). Have at it!

Now if I can only get my OLR back working (with some help from my friends). Good job - now we need to set up something where more than one of us is on line at a time

Greetings Jerry:> Not a problem at all. Now if I can only get my OLR back

Saw your other message about this. Guido's our MySQL expert here, so I'll let him give you the definitive answer, but my first thought is if you haven't backed up your database (none of us do regularly), you're pretty much stuck reinstalling greenie's database/zip and downloading the new messages since that build again. However, I'm fairly sure there's a database repair util in MySQL, but I've never used it (Guido?) so don't do anything just yet.
On the other hand, better keep an eye on the computer. What you've experienced is not a good sign. It may be the beginnings of a hardware failure.

A few of us typically fly on Sat nights at 7pm PT. However, if you want to schedule a flight of your own, just post a message here of the time and date and see if anyone commits to joining you. I still have FS98 on my system so I'm up for a flight.

Any suggestions as to exactly which files/folders should be backed up? Not essential I know but it's more efficient than just backing up everything.

Guido will have to verify, but I would think all you need is in mysql/data and all subfolders below it.

the correct way to backup your database is by using the tool
'mysqldump.exe'. This must be called once for each table in
the database (of course with appropriate parameters) and
gives you a database version and OS independent dump that
can be used for a later restore. If you are interested in
this official method, let me know, and I'll tell you the
details.
The quick and dirty way is AFAIK to first shutdown MySQL,
then zip the C:\mysql\data folder including all files and
subdirectories, as Ben already told you. This is a
non-portable version specific backup, that means if you
update MySQL, it might no longer be usable. You can
partially automate that by using InfoZIPs free ZIP (a DOS
box commandline ZIP utility) and calling that within a DOS
batch file. Of course, the backup should be done regularly.
The rest of the installation doesn't need to be backuped, if
you keep your installation ZIPs.

Guido

It'll work with any DirectX game, so that includes FS98. Give it a try.
