"Radio Etiquette on the CTAF"

Here's a great article posted recently on AvWeb about one of the most annoying (and potential dangerous) habits that has developed recently at non-towered airports.http://www.avweb.com/news/columns/183931-1.html
You can find a lot of useful information about operations at non-towered airports in the AIM (http://www2.faa.gov/atpubs/AIM/index.htm)--specifically 4-1-9 (http://www2.faa.gov/atpubs/AIM/Chap4/aim0401.html#4-1-9) and at the AOPA Air Safety Foundation Web site, specifically (http://www.aopa.org/asf/safety_topics.html#airport and http://www.aopa.org/asf/publications/sa08.pdf).

Good articles!Having an ATP is a CFI prevented me from doing much uneeded radio talk. As in the article, he hates a lot of what he hears so he wasn't about to have me doing it!
I also invested in COMM1 simulator for the PC, I felt it did help give me a chance to practice at home and reduce the number of "fumblemouth" episodes.
Have you by chance seen the new AOPA ASF "Ups and Downs" of landings seminar/video? I've seen the clip they provide, would like to see the whole tape but its not scheduled by me yet.

I agree. An excellent article and very well written. Rick is a regualar on Compuserve's AVSIG forum. His points are well made and those of us who do most of our flying at untowered airports can relate . Radio clutter is even more profound around here where there are a large number of untowered airports, all assigned the same CTAF frequency. On a blue sky weekend, just the normal position reports can fill up much of the airspace and when guys get on there and start 'jawing' about their weekend plans, it can be frustrating at the least...***Reality - the refuge of those who can't handle simulation***

Actually, Plum Crazy has been 'hangered' in my son-in-law's warehouse since about last November. Pennsy was too cold this winter to do much open cockpit flying. I did spend my time under instruction in an XAir (2 place ultralight) getting the tickets punched for registration as an "Untralight Pilot" with the US Ultralight Association.
The next step is to wait until the turf field dries out enough that we don't need a tow truck to take off in a Champ to get me some tail dragger time and then it will be time to get Plum Crazy in the air. Should be in time for the Fly In season which gets going in earnest in June around here.
