"Wright Flyer"
Posted by Ben_Chiu on 09-03-03 at 02:40z
Greetings! Now that some of us have had some time to fly FS2K4 a bit, and because this is the year we're celebrating the 100th year of powered aviation et al, I was wondering what everyone thinks of the Wright Flyer in FS2K4. Is it too easy to fly, too hard, etc.? How realistic is the flight model, and how far did you fly with your first flight?
Thanks!
Ben

I personally found it way too hard, managed to get it airborne for around 10 - 15 seconds before it either went into a small spin, or just continously banked to the right, think I might be doing something wrong!

Pretty much ditto what Sam said. could NOT keep it airborne for more than 10- 15 secs.Vic

The time I tried it the flier stalled every time I tried to get more than a couple dozen feet of altitude. Even a very gentle climb resulted in a stall.Robert

Hi guys! That's really odd. What realism settings and weather are you flying with?
Maybe I'm doing something "wrong."

Hi Guys,>That's really odd. What realism settings and weather are
>you flying with?
I flew all Wright Flyer flights with no weather settings changed from defaults.
I had no trouble with the Wright Flyer when I flew it as the first flight in the newly loaded FSCOF. I did not changed any of the FS2004 default settings before my first flight which was the Kitty Hawk flight. I maintained a relatively straight course because I already knew about the difficulty of controlling the Wright Flyer in turns.
I managed to get the Flyer up and flying along steadily (keeping it low to stay in the ground effect) and finally put it down softly on the beach about twenty feet from the oceans edge. Quite a long flight, which surprised me.
Later on I was flying from my home airport of Burbank, CA and flew the flyer toward Glendale. Part way through the flight I switched the flight model realism to Hard and then I could not keep the Flyer in the air at all. Kept starting to roll/yaw to the left and very quickly was unrecoverable.
My best guess was that the default setting out of the box was easy flight model, and that's why the Flyer was relatively easy to fly on the first try. I will do some testing at easy, medium, and hard settings and let you know how it goes.
Is the flight model realism in FS2004 only easy, medium , or hard? I much preferred the continuous slider that was available in FS2002.

Maybe you're just good! <g> I have my sliders all the way to the max using the "fair weather" setup.

Hi Wilbur: I have my sliders all the way to the right as well.
I can keep the thing in the air almost indefinitely (usually run into a building or some other obstacle because it turn). All I do is to just try and keep the wings level and never leave ground effect, and as long as the ground doesn't drop out from below you, you can just keep going and going.
I'll have to try it in some heavy wind or something.

Well Orv<g>, maybe that's the trick. I keep trying to get some altitude in the beast, and fail every time. I'll give her a shot staying in the ground effect and see what happens.--Greenie
