"Becoming an Airline Pilot"
Posted by Eifersucht on 08-04-03 at 03:36z
Hey guys! Ever since I can remember, aviation has always sparked my interest. I just love airplanes and how they work as well as how they fly. A few weeks ago, I finally made up my mind that I want to pursue a career in aviation and become an airline pilot. I am 16 and will be a junior this year. I have been looking into a few colleges that offer flight training, etc. as well as the Air Force and am wondering which would be the better choice. I am just looking for a way to get trained and get my foot in the door of the industry so I can reach my goals. I have been getting A's in every area except for math, which I tend to get B's in. (Unfortunately, math isn't one of my better subjects). I am also taking the hardest classes that my high school has to offer (Physics, Calculus, Chemistry, etc.) to better prepare myself for a job in the airlines. So, if there are any airline pilots, or just pilots in general who would like to give me some suggestions/opinions on how to get my flight training, etc. please respond.
Thanks!
Eif

Greetings Eif:You might post this message in the Airlines and Airliners forum. It's hosted by a Captain for United Airlines (who was in the Air Force at one time too).
As for paying for flight training, as you're probably aware, learning to fly is very expensive, and the ways that people pay for their training varies greatly. It sounds like you're doing some of the right things. Going to school is good. Getting a degree will help if you want to fly with the majors (not necessarily an aviation degree), as will avoiding tattoos and body piercing. Mark will be able to give you some insights.
Best of luck on following your dreams.

Hey Ben!Thanks for the information! Sadly, I am fully aware that it costs a lot of money to get the proper training, and that is one of the, actually probably the only negative side to flying imo. I have heard that most pilots at one time or another recieved their CFI license to build time as well as pay for flight training, and I think this is an excellent idea as it kills two birds with one stone in a way. Anyway, I thought about posting this message in the Airlines and Airliners forum, but seeing that the last post was sometime near/around July 11, I thought I would post here as the FS forums seem to get the most attention lol. I have already posted the message in that forum and am eagerly awaiting a response from Mark. Thanks again!

Yes, but there's quite a bit invested in becoming a CFI in the first place.

Mark has been flying quite a bit (and he left for another trip yesterday afternoon). This is also the busy time of year for aviation with Oshkosh, etc., so things will pick up again when the season ends.
