Here's an interesting situation:

Is it legal to fly VFR on top and use a handheld GPS to fly direct? :)

I would think yes. It's just another navigation aid - as long as you didn't violate any airspace rules while going direct, like overflying the White House or something equally as dumb. :)

I should probably lay out some more of the details. The regs say that:

1. You may not fly IFR with a non-IFR certified GPS.
2. Handheld GPS' are not IFR certified.
3. When you fly VFR on top, you're on an IFR flight plan, but using VFR flight rules
