"Scenery Textures in FS2002"
Posted by flynn688 on 01-26-03 at 04:12z
Maybe someone has had this problem... I'm running fs2002 on my XP box and my graphics are terrible. Clouds and the inside of the cockpit seem fine but the ground scenery has no detail and the image of the ground will blur when you pitch the nose down towards the ground. I am running XP on a system with 512megs of RAM, 1400 MHz AMD Thunderbird. My video card is Nvidia Gforce2 MX/MX400 with 64megs RAM. I just replaced the mobo with a Gigabyte GA7VAXP. I can't believe that my system is lacking to run FS2002 but I'm running out of ideas. video card has been changed twice with the same results. Video drivers are the most up to date version. The only thing different is the new board is 8xAGP and my card is a 4x (I think). Any Ideas?-Pete

Hi Pete,You've got no problems with the system as I see. Although you are using the latest drivers for the video card try rolling back a set or two. Under Display Properties/Settings what is your Color quality set to?
Within Flight Sim and under Options/Settings/Display play around with all the options under Scenery/Aircraft and Hardware. Also, what have you got set as your frame rate, if it's above 25 then reduce it to 20-25 as above that then the setting is irrelevant within the cockpit view. Reducing it will free up resources within Flight Sim for other task's i.e. Auto Gen..
HTH.

Thanks for the input James. As far as rolling back my drivers, this is a new install of XP so I have no drivers backed up to the system yet. My color quality is set to the Highest(32bit). As far as in game display settings I should have pointed out in my original post that I had played around with different settings quite a bit and did try again after your reply. I did change my frame rate to 23 with no noticable difference. If I knew how to capture a screen shot I would post it to give a clearer picture of what i'm seeing. I even tried a few well placed hits against the box and slamming the mouse on the desk a couple times. That usually works but not this time...I'll plug away for a while before I take it out in the back yard and Babe Ruth it. Thanks again James.-Pete

Hi Pete,Have you also tried to reduce your color quality down to 16? Have you tried Nvidia's web site for previous drivers?
To do a screen capture while in FS hit the Print Screen key on the keyboard ! Then open up either Paint or any other similar programme you use and click on Edit and then Paste. You can then upload the file and it will be inserted (with Bens help) <s> into the thread <s>.

Greetings Pete:Here are some perhaps silly questions:
Do the bad textures appear in all scenery areas?
Do you have a full install of FS2k2 (as opposed to a custom install)?
Do you have any 3rd party scenery installed?

What's that saying? If it ain't broke, hit it harder! <only kidding!>
Stick with it, we'll help you sort it out.
Best!

I did try changing my color settings to 16 bit with no results. The bad textures appear to be confined to mainly terrain and not so much in the sky. Buildings seem fine as well as trees. It's a full install of FS2002 with no 3rd party scenery. I've uploaded the file GrandCanyon.jpg so you can see what I see out my window. Thanks.

> Here's Pete's screen cap. Any ideas?First, use a program called Detonator Destroyer and remove ALL traces of the NVidia driver. Then go to www.guru3d.com and get one of the earlier drivers - say #2942 and try that. There are several later versions but they differ on various systems.
Also, what are your settings re; anti aliasing, tgransform & lighting, etc. They all make a difference. I would also delete the fs2002,cfg file from the FS2002 folder. When you run FS2K2 it will recreate itself. If you've set any custom settings, you might want to backup the .cfg file before deleting.
I feel really strongly that it is a driver problem.
You might want to jot down your display settings in fs2k2. With a 64M MMX card you cannot run with all sliders maxed.
PS Before trying any of the above, uninstall and reinstall the nvidia driver,

Vic

I tried Detonator Destroyer but unfortunately it doesn't support XP yet. I did install driver version 2.9.4.2 and the scenery didnt change. Although XP may not have completely uninstalled the previous drivers. I have tried teaking different dispay settings but no all display settings are at defaults.Display/Scenery:
Texture Quality - Max
Terrain Mesh Complexity - 80
Terrain Texture Size - High
Autogen Density - Normal
Scenery Complexity - Dense
Effect Details - Medium
Max Vis - 90mi
Cloud Density - 75
Both Dawn/Dusk texture smoothing and Terrain detail textures are checked.
Display Aircraft
Aircraft Texture size - High
Virtual Cockpit gauge quality - high
Aircraft cast_shadows, Landing lights and Resize panel w/ main window are checked
Display Hardware:
Target framerate - 30
Full screen Resolution - 800x600x32
Hardware acceleration is enabled
Lights=3
MIP Mapping and Multi texturing are chaecked
Filtering is Bi-linear

Hi Pete,As well as that which Vic mentioned in uninstalling display drivers when you come to reinstall do so in SAFE MODE as I found on a couple of cards not all drivers were being installed whilst in Win XP.
If that fails to solve along with deleting the FS2002.cfg file I would go down the road of uninstalling FS and BEFORE re installing close ALL other programmes before hand.
Let's know how you get on.

Hi Pete - I had the EXACT same problem back in June, all the scenery was just black and brown rectangles, and I've been searching everything I've got to remember what I did. Double check your monitor refresh rate, either set it manually or use "adapter default" - do not use "optimal". I *think* it was on guru3d that I found instructions on how to manually remove ALL traces of the NVidia drivers - or it may have been the NVidia site itself. I'd *completely* remove the old driver - also I believe there are some registry settings that have to be removed. Set the display to SuperVGA and reboot. Then install a different driver - I'd still go with 2942 until you get your problem resolved.
I also recommend turning your system OFF between steps rather than just rebooting.
Run DXDIAG and check that there are no problems in DirectX - btw, what version are you running?
I also remember reinstalling FS2k2.
IIRC, it was a 3rd party addon that I tried that triggered the whole mess but even after uninstalling it, the problem remained.
If I remember the exact steps I took, I'll let you know. The main thing is to get to as clean a "slate" as possible and start adding back. You might also do a clean boot - no non essential services running - and see if that helps. then add back items until it fails.
Sorry I can't be of more help but if it's any consolation, it *IS* just a combination of settings rather than a hardware problem.
HTH,
Vic
Of course, I could be wrong. I thought I was wrong once before, but I was mistaken.

You were correct it is a driver issue. To test it I threw one of my old small hard drives in my system and loaded it with 98SE and FS2002. I loaded up some older NVidia drivers and the graphics look MUCH better. I'm uploading a screen capture. It doesn't need to be posted but Ben if you could look at it and tell me if this is how it should look that would be good. Only thing left to do is completely get rid of XP's NVidia drivers so I can load some that work. Thank you all for the help.-Pete

Looks good to me. Big improvement, eh?

I'd be surprised if someone on the net didn't have details instructions on how to manually remove the drivers.

We aim to please.
Good luck!

Hi Ben,
>> I'd be surprised if someone on the net didn't have details instructions on how to manually remove the drivers. <<As far as I can gather within XP at any rate <s> I found that installing AND removing Display Drivers is best done in SAFE MODE!!! Don't ask me why but it's my experience of late <g>

Hi Pete,Thought it would be the Drivers. I'll re reply to this with a link to a good driver that WILL work with XP and FS2002 as soon as I get to my main PC.

Hi Pete,This slipped my mind <s> and you haven't been back to let us know if you've had any joy with previous posts!
Try Nvidias 40.72 or 41.09 drivers You can also try http://www.omegacorner for the Omega40.72 driver.
