"Purple Plague"
Posted by maurice on 09-19-02 at 18:03z
Since Installing a GeForce4600 128MB (drivers V.30.00, W98SE, PIII 1GHz) my FS2002 Cessna and Baron panels are now showing a wierd flickering purple and green crosshatch pattern. I can stop this effect by turning off Anti-aliasing, but I would prefer to keep that activated because it reduces the crawlies on ground scenery.I've seen this mentioned on the forums here and there in the past but as I wasn't suffering with it at the time I took no notice.
Can anybody help me clear this annoyance, svp?

Don't reply, fellahs.I found the solution was to set the colour depth in FS2002 from 16 bit to 32.
That seems to cure the problem.

Thanks for the update. Glad you discovered the solution.

If only all graphics related problems were so easy to solve Mind you, easy or not, this sort of thing can certainly take some time to fix.

What-Ho, Paul.>If only all graphics related problems were so easy to solve Mind you, easy or not, this sort of thing can certainly take some time to fix.<
Yes, I spend hours in front of this PC fixing daft little problems. Usually, as soon as I fix one, something else goes wrong.
But, after a big crash and re-install of W98, a new GeForce4 install and trying a few different video drivers for it I've now got Flightsim running again just about allright.
I seem to remember that you were getting yourself a new LCD earlier this year. If that's so what is your impression?
I bought an 18" Eizo after some soul-searching but I'm glad I did. It's superb for simming.
Maurice.

Hi Maurice>> I seem to remember that you were getting yourself a new LCD earlier this

When I bought a new PC back in April (?) I specc'd an 18" LG TFT. The graphics card is the nVidia GeForce3 Ti500. The original driver that came with the PC gave a weird halo effect to any red lettering (eg frame rates, etc) but, since upgrading the driver, now the 28.32, I've had no further problems. I've tried later drivers with no obvious improvement so stuck with what works.
The screen's a dream. Wouldn't go back to a CRT for anything, but I know others out there who still prefer them so obviously it's very much a matter of personal choice. I'm not surprised you like the Eizo. I've read some very complimentary reports on their LCDs. What I wouldn't give to be able to afford another TFT on this now rather cramped desktop
As an aside, I was looking into the possibility of upgrading my rather dated 4:3 TV set the other day. Apart from being stunned by the monstrous size (and cost) of some of these 32" 16:9 sets, which I've decided to steer clear of for a while, I was particularly taken with a rather gorgeous 22" LCD 16:9 TV. Trouble is they come in at >£2000. Guess that idea is another that goes on hold until I win the lottery, when I'll probably have one for each room and a big 50" plasma set for the home cinema - ha ha.

The 28.32 driver kit also works well with my GeF4.

Moi aussi. One still sees TFTs in stores showing dim and foggy pictures and that's what put me off investing in one for my PC. But as soon as all TFTs perform like my Eizo and the prices continue to fall, CRTs will be finished for PCs and TV IMO.

Understood. Having spent much of my career in the development of PAL, NTSC and Secam television reception systems involving shadow mask CRTs and being aware of what an amazing piece of production technology they comprise I'm a bit sad to have to contemplate their demise but I can't see the massive chunk of hardware that is a large-screen picture tube continuing very far into the future.
Incidentally, I was up near you at BA Heathrow Cranebank the othe day for a couple of hours on a 744 sim (http://www.virtualaviation.co.uk/index.html), one of eighteen they have there. It wasn't the first time I'd tried out a big sim but it was the best. Being an experienced pilot myself (MSFlightsim<G>) I didn't do too badly in it. Kai Tak was still in the support software on that sim and I made one good landing there and two hard ones. But the sim was still working when I left it.
Yes, these big sims suffer from program malfunctions just like my PCs Flightsim<g>. Touching down at one airport in Scandinavia I was suddenly 100' under the runway and watching the edge lights whizzing by above my head!
The two hours went in a flash. I can understand why these sims are known in the trade as "sweatboxes".

Courtesy of your including their web address I've just paid them a virtual visit. Looks like a whole lot of fun, something to consider if I ever win the lottery <g>.

That should amuse any MS coders looking in on this thread.

Hi Paul..PMFJI here..
>> When I bought a new PC back in April (?) I specc'd an 18" LG TFT...The screen's a dream. Wouldn't go back to a CRT for anything <<
Neither would I <g>
I bought the Sony M81, and a DVI cable, to go with my Asus Ti4600. I wouldn't go back, either. Once I saw it in action, my GDM400 CRT 19 inch and its hernia inducing properties <g> went to my daughter for her Mac. She gets her boyfriend to lift it when necessary <g> so I then needed another M81 to display FSNav...so I have now saved twice the desk space I would've saved with just one...
I now have more desktop, less heat, and because they are much lighter, I added a further layer to the desktop, with pockets under the two screens, to slide my keyboards back to accommodate the CH Yoke.
>> As an aside, I was looking into the possibility of upgrading my rather dated 4:3 TV set <<
Well, I upgraded to a 32 incher last year. Once you've seen/heard Voyager/Stargate and other programs with their 'surround sound' effects on a DTS equipped TV, you're hooked. Go for it when you can.

I've never doubted their quality of output for one minute, it's just finding the space to put it somewhere ...
