"frame rates and military sims"
Posted by gooper on 07-29-02 at 01:47z
I need help with increasing my frame rate, when I hit shift+Z twice to show what my rate is it is around 26-30 is this good or bad? also it says it is locked at 30fps why is this and can it be fixed so i get better performance?on another topic does anyone know if there are any really good military aircraft available tu us hardcore sims (good mainly in terms of flight modelling, physics) Iknow there are some great airline sims such as PSS 747 etc but i cannot seem to find any military ones and being ex-military myself that is where my first love is. appreciate any help with both these topics, gooper

That's excellent. I'm pleased when I get over 15, and that's on a Pentium 2.4GHz with the latest GeForce 4 Ti4600! <G>. Mind you, I do have everything turned up to max and use some *very*dense scenery.
Visit the display options -- with those frame rates you can afford to improve some of the things in there. Go menu, Options-Settings-display.

Better? Hmmm. The frame rate "locking" actually means "limiting". The limit just tells FS not to bother to try to do more even if it can and instead to spend a little more time on other things, like smoother AI or dynamic traffic, and other non-user aircraft activities. you can adjust this limit, or even set it "unlimited", in the Options-Settings-Display section.

I'm not into military stuff, but if you want something as good as FS but also with guns and bombs and stuff like that you might want to try Microsoft's Combat Flight Sim. (BTW I think CFS 3 is likely being scheduled for release before Christmas -- at least if MS stick to their usual pattern it will be).

A word of warning here. If you set that value to unlimited you may not be able to reload FS2002. This was my experience recently whilst experimenting.
It happened twice so I'm certain it is a bug. Set it to 100 or less and no problem, but avoid unlimited.

Hmmm. Never had any problem here with "unlimited". Since getting my lovely new shiny 2.4GHz PC I've been trying things like that -- also similarly no on my olde Athlon ex-1GHz, which had been giving me grief recently, till the Trentham show on Sunday when I went mad and replaced the mobo and processor for an Athlon 2100XP variety with 512Mb of PC2700 memory!
Interestingly, so far at least, the Athlon 2100XP holds its own against the P4 2.4GHz despite its real clock speed of 1.7xx MHz. mind you I've not done exact equivalent testing, benchmark fashion.
Don't know why your setting of unlimited could cause a problem. What did it set in the CFG file? Maybe there's something else I've set there which alleviates it. I vaguely remember something about there being TWO FS2002.CFG parameters which were related to this, not just the one, and I may have edited them manually some time back.

Pete

Hi Pete,<<Don't know why your setting of unlimited could cause a problem. What did it set in the CFG file? >>
This is the relevant line...
UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT=0
I've just had this happen a third time so it's definitely a problem on my system. Maybe it's because I have opted to show the Start-up screen so I can choose airport, time, aircraft etc. In any case it really doesn't seem worth pursuing as I normally have this value set to 30. There are too many variables in the CFG to make finding the problem easy. If you don't get the problem then all well and good. I only mentioned it because it caused a problem on my system.
That sounds like a nice system - it's about time you upgraded! Well done AMD for keeping up with the fastest processors from Intel. I can't imagine Intel are over the moon though. The continued struggle for power will only benefit end users.
Going back to your message...

Well nothing springs to mind here. If you do happen to remember what it is it may be helpful but as I said earlier setting that value to unlimited is not something I intend to do now that I know the consequences.

Ah yes, of course. and the other one is LOD_TARGET_FPS (in the Graphics section).
There's a lengthy article about these and what to do with them in the Flightsim Veterans Club "Tips and Tricks". Check www.fsgateway.com, go to
Tips >> FSVC Tips and Tricks >> FS2002 Simulator >> FPS slider - the full explanation

My CFG reads LOD_TARGET_FPS=21.
Thanks, I will. I seem to remember you passed a document about this to me some time ago but the web site may have more up to date info.

Hi Ray,> My CFG reads LOD_TARGET_FPS=21.
The reference I gave you says that when using the slider this value gets set to something like 70% of the FR Limit value you set, so 21 would presumably mean that you set 30 as the limit.
I think its point is that there's more flexibility available in the CFG than you get with the slider.

No, I think it's probably the same one. I forgot I passed it to you. I lost my copy and had to go search for it again. The "Flightsim Veterans Club" has moved, so I have to thank Google for finding it again for me. <G>
BTW did you download and try those complete airline AI packages from ProjectAI? How did you get on? I've still got some files I downloaded and may try them tomorrow -- I didn't back then because my (old) flying PC was playing up too much.

Pete

Bang on! I shall have a read of that document or web site once I have a bit of time. Things are quite busy at the moment as I'm sure you're aware
<<BTW did you download and try those complete airline AI packages from ProjectAI? How did you get on? >>
I had some problems with the BA file (can't quite remember the error message) so at that point I gave up. I still have the files and once I have some time I may give it another go. My interest in Ai comes and goes. I was quite keen when we last spoke but I'm in a trough at the moment.

I can't recall where I read it but altho the 2/3 ratio is correct there is a caveat. If you set your max FR to unlimited and later change it to something lower, the 2/3 ratio is not set and must be adjusted manually.
In any event, it makes sense to double check it.

Hi Vic,> I can't recall where I read it but altho the 2/3 ratio is correct
Seems to be exactly 70% rather than 66.666..% in my tests.

I think the article I referenced says the point is you might be better off adjusting the two separately anyway. It wasn't a matter of checking it, but not using the slider -- just changing the values in the CFG file.

Hi Gooper,>> I need help with increasing my frame rate, when I hit shift+Z twice to

To chime in with Pete, those are excellent framerates! Many would give their left arm to have that kind of performance <g>. As an FYI, most movies on film that you see in the theater play at a framerate of about 24, and those movies look pretty darn good don't they? AAMOF, most people can't distinguish anything above 30fps anyway, so you might as well put that extra CPU power on to something else like AI traffic (as Pete says).
Is that FS2002 you're using? What type of system?
