"Lose K/B using FS2K02"
Posted by Dom_Hogan on 07-15-02 at 13:33z
Hi flyers . Just got a new P4 2gig rig & GE4 Ti4200 (64mb). After flying a while I lose keyboard functionality so I'm stuck with having to reset the 'puter with 'THAT' button . Has only affected me while using the FSim...any clues out there? I have a feeling I had this problem with my previous system but can't remember any solution.
Cheers, Dom (YSSY)

Greetings Dom:A few questions:
Does your mouse continue to work after you lose the keyboard? What controllers do you have connected to your system? Is your keyboard a USB keyboard?

Hi Ben. Only PS2 connections & yes the mouse continues to work. This is fine in windowed mode of course but useless in full-screen!Am using CHPro USB yoke & pedals. Ya know, I'm certain I had this same problem on my previous system but am danged if I can remember how I overcame it . I went 3 hours last night without the problem...maybe I scared it into working .

The first thing I'd make sure of is the keyboard itself isn't the culprit. Do you have one to swap out to verify?
I've also seen bad keyboard controller chips, but let's hope it's not that.
The other usual things are to make sure that you've got all of the latest Windows updates, make sure there aren't any conflicts (especially IRQ conflicts) in Control Panel: System: Device Manager for the keyboard or anything else.
If we can narrow down that it's not a hardware problem (the easy diagnostics), we can search for a software issue. The difficulty of tracking down software issues without a clean OS install is not promising, but we'll attempt it if required.
Hope this helps!

I don't know that it'll be any help to you, but this reminds me very much of a problem I had years ago on the office network. The accounts software was a DOS program. One machine kept locking up in the accounts program, but never when Windows or a Windows application was at the front. Originally, we thought the computer had crashed, but after lots of investigation we concluded that only the keyboard was stopping working. It was possible by network connection, to confirm that the computer was still running Windows behind the scenes and talking to the network quite happily.
I wrote a small program which allowed one of the other computers to force the "crashed" computer to switch from the DOS program to the Windows desktop, and the problem machine then became fully controllable, even by keyboard. Bringing the DOS program back to full screen at this point would kill the keyboard again, but at least we could close down any Windows apps gracefully before hitting the big red button.
I never did get to the bottom of the problem, unfortunately, so I can't really give you any suggestions. Does yours ever lose the keyboard if you're running FS in a window rather than full screen?

This problem occurs only with FS. I can lose it in windowed or full screen mode(which I no longer use since there is no way out!) .Maybe I'll have to reinstall FS just to see what happens...but the frustrating part is that I remember this happening previously on another system & I can't recall the solution.
I'm not concerned with general hardware problems since only FS causes it. Even so, there are no conflicts & I'll swap k/bs for sure.

OK, more questions, are you running DirectX 8.0a or later? Might try reinstalling that as well. Your problem could also be heat related. FS is one of the more hardware intensive programs, but most heat related lock ups appear as sound and video problems, but you never know with this stuff.
Keep us posted!
