"Lee James off-line for a few days"
Posted by RayProudfoot on 07-07-02 at 18:18z
Hi all,Just to let you know that Lee James' laptop has become infected with a virus so he'll be off-line for a few days while he gets his sytem sorted out.
It's probable that he will lose his Address Book because of this virus so please bear with him. Sending him a message will allow him to repopulate it.
Thanks!

thanks for letting us know.
By the way: This is the first time I saw a message from you for a long
time. Have you been on vacation? I remember you as one of the most
active members of FSFORUM. Same is true for Pete Dowson.

Hi Guido,I'm still around and still flying. I suppose the main reason I haven't posted much recently is because I haven't seen any threads I felt I could contribute to. My last response was to the Stonehenge scenery problem about 2 months ago.
Forums often go a bit quiet during the summer months so I suppose this is no exception. Rest assured I'm still around.
Vacation? I wish! <g> I've just ended my two week holiday at home watching Wimbledon and as usual the Brits left empty handed. Already looking forward to next year!
Written online and with the aid of two fingers! Same technology as thirty years ago!

Hi Jimbo,But of course. Wouldn't miss it for the world. I may even think about the GoFlight gear this time. Not as good as the PFC but more affordable.
A phone call to Bob at RC may give you the answer you seek.

Hi Dude,Yep, GoFlight's kit is sort of expensive though. Waiting for the 747 MCP from Aerosoft Australia.
Will give him a call soon to find out.

Greetings Yorkshire-chappie!<<Yep, GoFlight's kit is sort of expensive though. Waiting for the 747 MCP from Aerosoft Australia.>>
I want it primarily for the avionics - the 767PIC has its own a/p controls which can't currently be mapped to GoFlight gear although I understand they are looking into it.
The reason I said it was more affordable is because it's modular and can be built up over time as opposed to buying a big box all at once.

Hi Mancunian Geezer (LOL),I suppose looking at it in that respect it's probably ok and I was thinking of getting some of there stuff to. Depending on when Pete will let me have the kit you rejected <G> will depend on what else I go for.

Hi James (I've run out of salutations! <g>),<<Hi Mancunian Geezer...>>
Manchester? Cheshire if you don't mind Only just mind you - three miles up the road and it would be Manchester
If you fly props you will love the Cirrus yoke. As Pete say's I couldn't get comfortable because of limited space. Being poor I have to make do with one PC for everything including e-mails and I just couldn't get the keyboard in a comfortable position. I'm sure you will have no such problems in your loft!

Hi Ray>>I couldn't get comfortable because of limited space<<
Have you heard of ZKeys? I use them (1 large pad). It is less bulky than a keyboard and multiples can be progd onto one button press. Otto Wipfel of Thornbury, Bristol is a great enthusiast.
You can find details on this website:

Hi Frank,<<Have you heard of ZKeys? I use them (1 large pad). It is less bulky than a keyboard...>>
No but I have a CH Pro Throttle that allows keystrokes to be programmed much like ZKeys I suspect. Looks like a nifty idea for those without any other means.

Your nearer Manchester than Chester though <LOL>.The only props I tend to use in FS are either the C130 Herc and the DC3 by Roy Chaffin. You poor, pull the other one <g>. If you didn't use the keyboard you'd be OK, there was enough buttons on the thing to do away with the keyboard <s> Your probably right in the space I have though <G>.

Yes, certainly, provided I can get a lift again -- I hope Ray will have room in his conveyance. As you know with my eyesight problems I'm not allowed to drive any more (same reason I was stopped from real flying).

LOL! That's not likely ... unless they make a better one and send me it! <G>. However, the Cirrus II and Avionics will be available one of these days now that Ray rejected it ... it's especially good for single and twin props and turbos, but not so realistic for jets of course.

If I know Ray he'll drop by and pick ya up. If not give me a shout and I'll swing by for ya mate. Yep, I know about the old eye sight problem. Hope it's not to bad at present.

Ha well, worth the try

Why's Ray rejected it? You know I'll take it (if the price is right) been hoping I'd have had it a long time ago

Hi James,> Why's Ray rejected it? You know I'll take it (if the price is right)
> been hoping I'd have had it a long time ago
Partly ergonomics vis-a-vis his desk, screen, keyboard, chair and lllooonnnggg legs, I think, at least that was the gist of it as far as I understood. Also I suspect because, as I said, whilst it is ideal for single and twin props it's a bit incorrect for jet airliners. And finally, Ray is a big 767PIC fan (I hate the thing), and none of those advanced cockpits -- Dreamfleet, Phoenix, Wilco -- are very amenable to control by external hardware. You still really need to use the mouse. The 767PIC folks did do a bit more than the others -- via keyboard assignments for most things, and I do use these in the PFC driver -- but they don't work so well.
I'm sure Ray will explain better if I've got it wrong somewhere. <G>
If you want to haggle on price give me a call. There'd need to be strings -- I'd have to either ask you to do tests on any changes in the driver and/or hardware if they ever arose, or alternatively be able to borrow the kit back on rare occasions.

Pete

Hi Pete,Long time no speak, I hope you're in good health.
<<I'm sure Ray will explain better if I've got it wrong somewhere. <G>>>
No you got it spot on and to be honest I don't miss the controls although I wish I could have kept the avionics stack (minus the mandatory hardware) but this wasn't possible of course.
Rest assured there's always a seat for you to the Show. Just a small way of repaying you for all your work you do for us simmers.
It's about time we had a chinwag so I'll call you over the weekend. The new system is working very nicely - I imagine you must have upgraded yours by now.

Thanks! That'd be great. If you like we could make it a weekend -- instead of dropping me off and going home, you could stay for dinner, snooker, and a Sunday flight. Oh, and Sunday lunch and an afternoon flick, of course.
On the other hand your other passengers might not want to do that?

No,but nearly. I've been totally indecisive for a long time. Between building my own, upgrading, or buying a new system. In the end I've gone for the latter and just ordered a complete new system based on the P4-2.4GHz. My first departure from AMD in more than four years (apart from the Notebook, that is, which is in for repair at present!). I expect delivery within two weeks.
If you ring on the weekend, and get the answering machine, just try my "home" number. I'm all over the place at present, tidying and re-organising things, but someone always answers the "house phone" (513296). Just don't bother between 10 and 11:30 pm Saturday night, as we'll be down the 'pub! <G>
Nice to hear from you,
Best,
Pete

That would be great - thanks. I don't mind driving everyone down to Brum but maybe they could follow me to your place so they could carry on home after the show. I'm sure Vulcan or Alan will pick up this message at some point but of course we still have a few months to go.
<<In the end I've gone for the latter and just ordered a complete new system based on the P4-2.4GHz.>>
Oh, that surprises me but perhaps you know something we don't. Maybe Intel have finally caught up with AMD and can now offer similar power albeit at a greater cost. I assume you will be getting the Ti4600 card as it's just a little too early for Matrox's Parhelia which sounds wonderful once the drivers have been finalised.
I'll call you around lunchtime Saturday. I'm sure we have a lot of catching up to do

The Evesham Evolution 2400 DVR (P4-2.4GHz) is actually the same price at the Evesham Axis 2100+Pro (Athlon 2100XP) but performed better in benchmarks, despite the latter having faster memory (PC2700 instead of PC2100) and twin RAIDUDMA133 disks.
I guess a Pentium running at 2.4GHz is faster than an Athlon running at 1.73 GHz (the actual speed of the XP 2100+). Still gives Athlons the edge clock for clock, but they haven't come out with one clocked as fast as Intel's new breed yet. Evesham are advertising an upgrade from the 2.4 to the 2.53 GHz Pentium, but these aren't actually available, and at an extra £250 just for several months delay and 5% extra speed I decided not to bother! <G>
I'm going for Evesham as I've had good experience of them in the past, and their systems regularly hit the "A" spots in PCPro and other mags. It'll come with XP, though I could have opted for 98SE -- but I thought I ought to have just one system on XP, for testing purposes. The USB EPIC works better under NT/Win2K/WinXP in any case, so it'll do for that. But for debugging and getting inside FS I'll have to use the older PC -- I'm not forking out for NT versions of my tools!
> I assume you will be getting the Ti4600 card

It comes with the 128Mb Ti4600, yes, and an 18"DVI TFT screen. As you know, I do like these, and will end up with no CRTs left one day! <G>

Okay ... I'll be out dog-walking sometime between 11 and 1, so make it after 1 -- but before 4 as I'll probably be out with them again by then!
Looking forward to a chat ...

Hi Pete,<<I guess a Pentium running at 2.4GHz is faster than an Athlon running at 1.73 GHz (the actual speed of the XP 2100+).>>
I'd agree. Back in March when I finally bought the processor that particular Intel chip wasn't around I think and even if it was the price for a stand-alone processor would have been prohibitive. I've been very pleased with the performance of my system. FS2002 is very fluid probably as much to do with the Ti4600 which is a great leap forward from the G400.
I can understand you sticking with Evesham who continue to pick up the awards. With rival companies going bust at least they seem to have a good support amongst the public.
I'm glad I didn't buy a TFT screen - I just couldn't adjust to the display. I'm more than happy with my bulky 19" Iiyama Pro 454 which for £340 was a bargain. Of course it can't come close to the TFTs for geometry but I can live with that.
I'll call you between 1 and 4 on Saturday.
Cheers,
