"Blurries are back??"
Posted by vgbaron on 06-20-02 at 18:05z
Strangest thing. Had to reinstall FS2k2. copied the CFG file and restored it after the reinstall. I *thought* I put all the addons back, etc but now I'm getting SERIOUS blurry textures in near and far views and nothing I've tried has fixed it.Prior to the reinstall fs2k2 was running perfectly fine.
Anyone have any ideas? I'll go through and see if I installed any other programs that might be doing something to FS2k2 but I doubt it.
Thanx,
Vic Baron

Hi Vic,First thing here is why the re install in the first place? Was the problem of blurring scenery there prior to you re installing?
Have you done any thing graphics wise? What's your graphics card?

Hi James - I loaded an addon ( a gps like display of AI aircraft positions ) and it trashed FS2k2. It wouldn't even load. So I copied my fs2002.CFG file and re installed. Then I put back the few bits of addon scenery. I doubt I put them back in the original order they were installed tho.
Prior to that, I had no problem with blurry textures at all.
Made no intentional changes to graphics. Did update the driver but only AFTER the blurries showed up - made no difference.
Have a GeForce2 GTS/64. System is Athlon 1.4 in Asus A7M266 mobo with 256M pc2100 ram.
Have ordered a 512m ram module and am going to try a Radeon 8500/64M but *something* or *some setting* has changed from what I had.
I think I might do another reinstall - start from scratch with no addons and see if I still get the blurries - and go from there.
Hmm - I did just install Real PLayer - wonder if it made any registry changes re graphics?

Well, I'm not much of a hardware guru but I'd be willing to bet that ny video card is going south. After a couple of reinstalls and endless tweaking, I can at least fly again. The textures aren't too bad but when I get close to the ground on approach everything (but the runway) is a blur. If I hit pause and count to 3 it will usually sharpen up. So if I understand correctly, my video card isn't refreshing the screen fast enough. I'm getting a different card next week so I'll be able to confirm that.Sheesh!

Hi Vic,What cache size do you have entered in the box in Scenery Library??
If it's low bump it up to 100.
When your pc boots up what size memory is it saying your graphics card is??

Hi James,From everything I have read the scenery cache size does nothing if all your scenery is installed to the hard drive, it only comes into play if you have scenery left on the CD.

Hi James,Not had chance to play with the cache yet but the snippet below from a thread at avsim is why I suggested the cache plays no part if all scenery is installed on the HD.
"Hi, solid evidence that the hdd cache is NOT used with a complete installation: Check the size of the FS2002 folder before you run the sim, then start it, let it run a while and ALT TAB out with the sim running in the background. Recheck the size, you´ll find that it´s the same (thus no scenery files are duplicated or rearranged in the cache).
"Also, watch the scenery cache folder(s) from another PC over a network while FS2002 is running, and with a full install, there is NO activity in these folders no matter what the cache size is set to."
I seem to remember a link to an article on Lago's site that dealt with the scenery cache and how it worked but am unable to find it at the moment, if/when I do I will post it here for further debate

Dave - I seem to recall reading that also. I've played around with the cache size many times and could notice no change one way or the other.
BTW, all seem to be well now. I stepped back, reset ALL my settings, cleaned out all old drivers, reinstalled and slowly retweaked. Seems happy now <G>.
Fingers are crossed!
Thanx for the suggestions,
Vic

Hi James,This is not to start a 'flame', hope we know each other to know that's not my style.
I have just come across a thread at www.avsim.com which discusses the scenery cache topic, vcache, and swap file settings, may be of interest to others.

Hi Vic,Roger all that mate. You could try renaming the fs2002.cfg file and starting FS2002 again and let it redo the cfg file and see what happens.

3 thoughts Vic,You say you copied the .cfg file and then restored it after the reinstall.
Was the cfg file copied *after* the 'blurries'? Just wondering if a texture setting in there had got changed, with copying the cfg file after the change it would be transferred to the reinstall.
Try resetting your display settings back to default, check if things are better and then put your settings to what they were, one at a time, and see if that cures it.
Try reinstalling your graphics drivers & DX just in case they got messed up (a technical term )
Have a look on www.avsim.com ->MSFS forum, there have been numerous threads there about blurries and perceived 'blurries'
Best of luck

Thanx for the suggestions Dave but unfortunately I tried all of them. I've read so many "tips" on curing the blurries that my EYES are blurry Tried a clean cfg - same issues. I'll be able to nail it down ( I hope) some time this week. I have another video card coming which should be at least as good as what I have. I have a GeForce2 GTS w/ 64M and I'm getting a Radeon 8500 w/64M. If they both do the same thing then I have some other problem.
I'm hoping the card just went bad - that's easy to fix.
Thanx,
Vic

>I've read so many "tips" on curing the blurries that my EYES are blurry
<I know the feeling well LOL!
I have not noticed these 'blurries' a lot of people talk about, maybe I'm lucky or more likely I need new eyes
I'm currently playing about with stereo drivers to use with red/blue glasses but the drivers installed at present do not give very good frame rates so am about to go back to 23.11 and see if that makes any improvement.
Hope the new Radeon card does the trick.
