"HELP!!!"

After finishing this morning's pass, I disconnected from the dial up connection only to have my computer hang up requiring a cold boot.
After Windows went through its 'scan disk' exercise and reporting that something had happened to MYSQL and fixing it, I attempted to run the OLR to read this morning's messages. Instead of my messages being displayed I got a warning 'flash' saying "Got error 127 from table handler" and it stopped right there.
What do I need to do to get things working again? Hope it doesn't include a download of all messages on the board but if necessary, that's the way it must be. I'm lost without the OLR already

I am not sure whether your cold reboot just damaged or
totally destroyed some necessary files containing database
table contents.
You could try to repair the database contents by using the
tool "myisamchk.exe" in the c:\mysql\bin directory. In case
you don't have it, send an email to Mike, to get it.
From the MySQL manual I believe you have to do the
following (never had a crash, so don't know exactly):
1. Reboot system
2. Open DOS Box
3. C:
4. cd C:\MYSQL\DATA\VPC
5. C:\MYSQL\BIN\myisamchk -r *.MYI

In case it doesn't work, send an email to Mike and he'll
probably can send you a zipped copy of his data directory.
That'll save you the download.

No Joy! I tried every iteration of these instructions that I could think of and the response to every try was "Bad Command or File Name".
I guess that I'll wait until Greenie announces the release of the OLR to the general membership and go to the other site and download the data file.... :'(

well, you know what the few DOS commands should do, do ya'?
It sounds as if "myisamchk.exe" is not present in
c:\mysql\bin. Did you check that? What's the result?
If you don't have it, Mike has probably left it out in his
MySQL zipfile to save space (Mike?). Therefore send him an
email, if the file isn't present.
Please also verify that there is a VPC subdirectory in
c:\mysql\data.
Please send me exact information, which of the steps failed.
The first steps before calling "myisamchk" should go ok in
any case.

Yep - have no problem navigating to the C:\mysql\data\vpc directory. It is after the entry C:\mysql\bin\muisamchhk -r *.myi command that I get the "bad command or file name" response.

I didn't have it originally but got it from Greenie. Only thing is that his file came as "myisamchk" not "myisamchk.exe". But I tried renaming it to add the extension and it still returned the "Bad command...etc" response.

Let me check this - one thing I never thought of - Oh wait - of course there is because I have no problem navigating to that directory with "C:\mysql\data\vpc"

OK here goes:
Reboot the computer - start in DOS
Computer: C:\(windows)>
Me: cd..
Computer: C:\>
Me: cd C:\mysql\data\vpc
Computer: C:\mysql\data\vpc>
Me: (and I don't really understand this part as I have not experienced this particular syntax before ie calling a program in another directory. I usually navigate to the directory in which the program exists and initiate it from there. I don't understand the requirement to go to data\vpc before calling the myisamchk program from the bin directory) C:\mysql\bin\myisamchk -r *.myi

Whoa! Stop the presses! A light dawns!
DOS changes the name of Myisamchk.exe to Myisam~1.exe
Tried to run that and recd a reply that "This program can't be run in DOS. Went to Windows and a double click runs the program but made no changes in the original problem. However, the program ran without the sqitches "-r *.myi" so let me try to set up a shortcut to that program in which I can add the switches to the command line.
Will report back.....

OK - it runs from windows with the switches, but goes by so fast I can't see what is happening. End result, however, is that the OLR still won't open the database.
Are we missing something in the command line to point this program at the \mysql\data\vpc directory?

Next phase

Went to DOS and ran VPC.BAT and then chose option to update data. It logged on as usual and downloaded new messages since last update with some error messages in two forums.
Opened the OLR with the OLR.exe and the GUI opened as normal and displayed new messages as usual. EXCEPT for two forums - VPC Beta (Private) and PWASC - both showed error message "Got error 127 from table handler". Apparently the data in these two fourms has become corrupted.
Is there any way to repair these two forums or to replace the data in just these two? Or will the repair executable maybe correct them if pointed to the right directory?

You should not start in pure DOS mode, but open a DOS window
with Windows running - that's different!
Normally, there should be an entry to run a DOS shell in a
window by using the Start->Programs->...MS-DOS menu entry.
From this DOS window, you should be able to run the tool as
described with all the options etc.

The reasons for executing the command from this directory is
that the DOS shell has to expand the "*.myi", that is only
possible if you are in the directory, where the files with
extension ".myi" are located. Unfortunately the command is
in a different directory, so you have to state the full
command path to the executable.
The tool should be able to repair the files, unless they
have been totally destroyed. Please check, if you have files
of the form
dcforumid5.myd
dcforumid5.myi
dcforumid5.frm
dcforumid5_date.myd
dcforumid5_date.myi
dcforumid5_date.frm
(replace the '5' by the value you have used).
If one or more of the files are missing, you will have to
download that forum again or receive an appropriate copy of
those files from Mike.

Yep. They are all there for all forums.
I guess I'll have to replace the data. Would it be possible to delete the two affected forums from the database, and then reinstall these two forums, and then run a "get new messages" and download only the two "new" forums? Thankfully, the two affected forums are low volume and if it were possible to download only those two, it would save a lot of time.

yes, that's possible, but requires some manual actions.
First you must login into the mysql command shell. You must
have done that earlier for converting the database. Then
you must remove some tables, and modify a third table.
1. Open DOS Box
2. c:
3. cd c:\mysql\bin
4. mysql
5. connect vpc
6. drop table DCForumID5;
7. drop table DCForumID5_date;
8. delete from forumlist where forum = 'DCForumID5';
9. quit
Repeat steps 6-8 for all affected forums and replace '5' by
the correct number.
To re-add the forums, directly use olr.pl as you already did
earlier.

BINGO!! Worked like a champ! Only problem was that I had forgotten how many messages were in the forum now called VPC Tech Support . Took me over an hour to download it. Might have saved time to download Mike's zipped data files, but, I learned something in the process so it was worth it. Thanks again for the personalized help.

Yes...thanks to you and your patient help ! Backup already done <G> and I have added the data file to my normal weekly backup to disk. Some lessons have to be learned more than once
