"Pics of our O200 Engine Major"
02-18-04, 01:29z

Here are some pictures from re-assembling our O200 (Cessna C150H) from our unplanned major.

It was actually fun and I learned alot doing it. Expensive lesson though...

Greetings Dave:

Aside from the learning experience you've gained, how much did you save by doing the work yourself do you figure? Just a ball park figure would be fine.

I don't know if I could handle doing the work myself like you did. I'm pretty mechanical, but I don't know how well I'd do if I were to start cursing at myself rather than someone else if my prop stopped turning on short final one day! :)

When is the first flight?

LAST EDITED ON 02-19-04 AT 12:55z ()

I tried to keep a record (in Excel) that I think has everything but some small trips for hardware (nuts, washers etc).

It looks like we have about $2,500 in it. Some of the shops we got parts from (incidentally, they were very supportive and two gave us tours of their shops when they heard we were doing most of the work ourselves) told us a overhaul from them would be in the $8,500-$10,000 depending on any extras.

We had Phil's cylinder shop in Brookville Ohio do the cylinders and also the inspections on the crank, cases etc. Most of the hardware we needed or wanted to replace we got from Signiture Engines in Cincinnati.

I had a lot of experience working on MX and street bikes in the '70's and '80's and our A&P partner has rebuilt several others, so I wasn't too worried.

I also bought an overhaul video on the O200 from Mattituck which was really helpful.

We also had all the O200 illustrated parts catalog and service/overhaul manual (plus we have the parts catalog and service manula for the C150H, very helpful when you do all your own work).

The engine was hung on the plane last weekend. We need to finish hooking the controls and putting the shrouding/cowling back on. Weather permitting it should be next week for first flight.

Well, that's quite significant!

Yeah, I know. I was only kidding around. You can't get a sign off on that kind of job without someone that knows how it's done watching over what you're doing.

Interesting. I never heard of such a thing, but doesn't surprise me.

I used to work at an FBO that did service on the fleet. I'd occasionally be asked to test fly aircraft being brought back into service. Normally at my stage in life, I wouldn't do such things (too much to lose and I didn't need to build hours, etc.), but the mechanics that performed the work would be on board, so I figured if he thinks he did a good enough job to risk his own butt, it must be OK. :)

Anyway, please keep us posted.

In response to cursing someone vs me if the prop stops...

I am actually more confident that we did it. I know that all torque values were followed, any suspect parts pitched, and all clearances correct. Plus I know what everything looks like and if there is a problem hopefulley a better understanding of what to do about it.

Since we weren't paying by the hour, we took our time and double checked everything.

My biggest surprise was how few parts they were; and how simple the design is.

I know, Dave. I was only kidding.

Another thing that surprised me the first time I saw a C-15X with the cowl off is how small the engine is too.

I realized you were kidding. While most shops do a good job; its just another engine/customer.

Since we worked for ourselves, I think we did as good or better job of assembling it; just maybe not as fast.

I am not taking the first ride; our CFII/ATP partner and Wil our A&P partner will.

I'll just be sitting with my handheld watching them orbit the airstrip for a hour or two.

9. "RE: Pics of our O200 Engine Major - IT RUN's!!"

Well,

It runs and runs great! I got the honors to start it, it ticked off after just two blades and I had oil pressure after about 15 seconds. Checked out the LH/RH mags etc, then had it idling at about 600 rpm smooth as silk. It never did that.

We shut down, checked for any leaks or seeps (none!). Let it cool down, cowled it up and started it back up. Our A&P partner and CFII partner then took off for a 40 minute shake-down flight.

Upon landing they said it ran great (sounded great on take-off and while they orbited the field).

Checked, still no leaks. Still have a few hours break-in to do but we are very pleased with the engine.

Everyone should rebuild at least one :-)

Greetings Dave:

Fantastic!

I bet you'll be pleased with the power now as well. It's one of those things that you don't know what you're missing until you see "the other side." And in a C-15X, a little extra power goes a long way.

Once again, Congrats and good luck!

Ben

It will be inresting to see how it is once it gets about 10 hours (broke in mostly by then). Besides the new engine, I put a new K&N air filter on it; its supposed to give up to a 5% increase in HP (which would be 5 in our case) as well as better climb etc.

I used K&N air filters on my motorcycles in the '80's and they did make a difference.

Now if only the snow and rain we have been getting since Mondays flight would go away...

I didn't know that K&N made aviation air filters. Neat!

Looks like you guys have been taking a beating. Well, let's hope spring resembles spring instead of winter for you guys soon.

Well,

The motor so far is running superbly. Very smooth. The old stutter when pulling the power at the numbers on downwind is gone.

No leaks or seeps so far!

Seriously, seems like a nice job, Dave.

Don't laugh. I've flown in aircraft that if the leaks stopped, it meant something was wrong (out of oil most likely). :)

All I have found so far is a seep below the vacuum pump area, we will deal with that at the first oil change.

My biggest problem so far is keeping the birds out of the cowl! They are worse than I recall this year.
