"New autogen textures for FS2004"
08-10-03, 00:45z

I downloaded a file from Avsim, called RESAUTOGENTEX.ZIP. The author has taken the default autogen textures and made them smaller. This results in a faster load and possibly better frame rates. I installed in my FS2004 and could notice no visual difference but I did get a slight framerate increase.

The toughest part is backing up 223 files. You *could* backup the whole folder of 900+ files but I didn't want to do that.

Anyhow, this is FYI and, as always, YMMV :)

Hi Vic:

When you say a "slight framerate increase", how much are you talking about? Less than a frame or something actually noticeable. :)

I would think that if the textures are significantly smaller than the stock textures, those with video cards with the least onboard RAM would experience the greatest improvement (less texture swapping required). Of course I'd imagine smaller textures would reduce the scenery "popping up" effects as well. I know you're running a state of the art system, so I'd be interested in hearing how these might work for the rest of us running more borderline hardware.

Ben

Ben -
With my TI4600 I got about a 4-5fps increase. Most noticeable when it's cloudy.

I agree - the more challenged vid cards should benefit the most. Main thing, back up all the files - if you don't like it - restore them - no harm done.

CYA,

Vic

Andy -

I don't think they're compatible with FS2002 but they may have a 2002 version - I didn't look.
