"Computer Pilot Magazine"
10-20-02, 11:15z

Hi guys,

when checking the links in my bookmarks, I found that
Microwings Magazine has been merged with some magazine
called "Computer Pilot".

Has somebody here subscribed this magazine and can tell a
little bit about its quantity (#pages overall,
#pages/article) and quality (printing, paper, contents)?

I have found and looked at some 4-pages sample articles on
the web which looked well done but covered only some
standard topics for beginners (how to navigate etc.) where I
already have books in that area.

Do they cover really advanced topics?

Do they offer a free companion CD with the complete contents
of the magazine as PDF, perhaps once a year?

How much of the mag is covered with advertisements (I assume
that is mostly not of interest for european users)?

Regards,

Guido

Hi Guido,

Yep, Microwings (as you know it) are no longer. They have been taken over by an Australian company. It's not as as good as MW but will go into it in more detail when I get a chance my friend.

I think I should have a copy in one of my boxes. I have to scramble through them and let you know.

As far as I am remember they cover reviews of new sceneries, tools, add-ons in a good detail. Its not a thick magazine in terms of pages I think.

I'll let you know.
See you,
Detlef

Hi again Guido,
I search through my old stuff but could not find the magazine, sorry. I think there is a good change at the Hauptbahnhof in Munich that you can buy one, or at the airport newspaper shop. Both have a lot of English language papers.

See you,
Detlef

Hi Guido,

>thanks for trying. I'll have a look.

I have a subscription to the magazine and it is very good in my opinion.

Format of the October 2002 issue is 84 pages if you count the front and back covers. :-)

A brief contents (all from October 2002) is:

Regular columns:

News and New Releases (4 pgs), Reviews (some programs and some aircraft packages), Online Resources (2 pgs), and Computer Pilot Mailbag (1 pg), Round Robin Adventure (Pacific Domestic Route) (5 pgs), and Ground School (this month's topic Weight and CoG) (6 pgs)

Articles:

Fly II - A Retrospective (5 pgs)
World Airports (Review) (3 pgs)
Reality XP's Flight Line Avionics (Review) (3 pgs)
Tutorial: Setting up X-Plane Controllers (3 pgs)
Windows XP, The Flight Simmer's Choice? (3 pgs)
Hardware Corner (4 pgs)
Flight 1 Software's Cessna 421 (Review) (4 pgs)
Centerfold photo of a F-18 Hornet. :-)
Lock On: Modern Air Combat (Preview) (3 pgs)
Dogfighting in the NA P-51 Mustang (4 pgs)
Eurofighter Typhoon: Operation Icebreaker (Review) (4 pgs)
EAA AirVenture 2002 Report (4 pgs)
etc .............. :-)
That got me up to the end of page 59 so there is mostly articles, but some ads included.

Graphics are superb throughout, and text is well written for the articles I have read so far.

Let me know if you have more specific questions.

Regards,
Melo

Guido

I get computer pilot because they also merged with Flight
simulator world magazine (it was call full throttle before that).I have been receiving full throttle then Flight simulator world for many years now. They kept many of the thing from FS world and i find it is very good.

Hi Ray,

Good to see you posting my friend. The jury is still out on this one for me :-) as I was an avid Microwings man I'm still not sure on this publication in relation to content etc. Will have to sit down with both mags to compare (when I get a chance) :-)

Hi Ray!

Great to see you here! I had my fingers crossed that you'd drop by, but I'll admit I was beginning to lose hope <g>. Let's not make it a once a year event ok? We all miss you around here!

>>I get computer pilot because they also merged with Flight

I never received Full Throttle, but I was once a subscriber to both MicroWings and Computer Pilot. In the time I subscribed, I consistently found Computer Pilot the superior publication. Particularly in the review department. It seems that MW was swayed much more by advertising dollars than journalistic integrity. This is not my view by the way...I was told by a reviewer who happened to be a friend of mine, that his "review" as written, would not be published because it was too negative. Of course the product was an advertiser for the mag. Once I heard that, the decision was made, my subscription would not be renewed.

I also have a good friend that used to work for PC Aviator (parent company for Computer Pilot), and he said that no such nonsense went on there. I kept that subscription for a couple of years, but for one reason or another I let it lapse. I suppose it's time to revisit renewing it since PC Aviator acquired MicroWings, and not vica versa <g>.

Once again Ray, GREAT to see you here! Welcome aboard!!!
