BillC Certificates/Ratings/Crew Stations: "Rogue Dialouts" 07-22-02, 19:37z  Hi Guys... My networked 'backup' PC has suddenly decided to try dialling out at intervals. Since I use a hardware switch to switch my modem between the two machines, I can prevent the modem dialling out by switching to the other PC. How the heck can I discover which program is causing it ? "RE: Rogue Dialouts" 07-22-02, 22:32z  Hi Bill Firstly I would make sure you are not leaving programs that require internet access in the background running, such as Instant Messengers. Make sure that your Dial Up Networking settings dont Auto Connect to the internet, and finally if your using Internet Connection Sharing make sure you have disabled the 'Dial on Demand' option. If you have ZoneAlarm you can use it to see which program is doing the dialing. Also, I don't recall the site, Pete Dowson recommended it, but there's a program called PROCEXP which can tell you which processes are running. When the computer tries to dial, run PROCEXP and check the running processes - you might be able to tell that way. "RE: Rogue Dialouts" 07-24-02, 20:01z  If it's something that just happened abruptly, lately... you might want to check into the possibility of the Klez or Frethem email worms that are spreading like wildfire in the past week or so. I spent a few hours the night before last cleaning Klez off of my mother's computer... and a few hours last night cleaning Klez off of my father-in-law's computer. What a mess. These things have their own SMTP routines which go on the Internet and spread the emails without you having to run Outlook or anything. Just a thought.... and a warning to everybody else out there to update your anti-virus software now. These things don't erase your hard drive or anything, but they are really insidious in the way they work. You don't want to get them.
