Van Nuys to Long Beach
Robinson R22 or Curtis J3 JennyThis is another flight using pilotage for navigation!
With all the recent rains the Los Angeles "River" needs to be checked for fools who try to ride down it on things like inner tubes.
Depart KVNY on a heading of 142 magnetic. About three miles from the center of the airport the "river" is visable leading towards the east near the Vetura Freeway (about 34° 8.72' N 118° 26.94' W). Make sure you maintain a postition where you or an imaginary observer can watch for people in the water. We've been cleared to fly at 2000 ft.
Follow the river east to Griffith Park. this section of the river parralels the Ventura Freeway, Vetura Blvd and then Forest Lawn Dr. There's a section of river along the north edge of the park that isn't visable in the simulator, but if you continue about 1/2 mile on a 60 degree magnetic heading you can spot the remaining section leading southeastward near Interstate 5.
Continue to follow the river along its winding path to the southeast and south to the port facilities in Long Beach. Much of the route will be near Interstate 5 or the Long Beach Freeway (Interstate 710). Fixed wing pilots can then turn left for landing on rwy 34L at KLGB. Park near the helipad south of the numbers on runway 7R.
