"AciveX error"
10-31-02, 21:16z

Help requested from any MS OS gurus please.

I have at least 2 FS related programs that until a few days ago worked OK but now give me an error msg and will not run.

'Error 429. ActiveX cannot create the object'

Because it affects 2 unconnected programs I suspect the fault is at the OS level (Win98SE), either missing or corrupt files. If anyone can give me a hint at what to look for I would be most grateful.

The only thing I think that has changed since the programs last worked was an uninstall of some multiplayer host & client files I found on avsim.
The installation files were *.msi files so I haven't a clue what they put on the system but they were uninstalled through the Win98SE 'add/remove programs' function.

Thanks.

Hi Vulcan,

How about upgrading to XP? ....just kidding, although it may solve the problem. <g>

When you uninstalled the programs, did you get an alert window that reads something to the effect, "Windows has detected that some shared files are no longer in use. Do you wish to delete them?" If you did, did you say yes? I've always been suspect of that alert, but admittedly, generally hit yes. I'm guessing that if that's the case, those shared files were still needed. If so, then reinstall those apps you deleted, then uninstall them again choosing "no" at the prompt.

Like I said, I'm just guessing here. Good luck!

Hi Mike,

>How about upgrading to XP? ....just kidding, although it may solve the

I'm not that desperate yet LOL!

>If so, then reinstall those apps you deleted,
then uninstall them again choosing "no" at the prompt.<

Now why didn't I think of that <g>

Working on your rationale I reinstalled those apps but did not uninstall them figuring that if the uninstall had removed some files then reinstalling would either replace them or the apps would not work, but <g>...the apps work but I still get the 429 error.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway, looks like it will have to be Vic's suggestion, or more likely a total reinstall, Win & FS have been on here for quite a while.

Rgds

Hi Dave -

You get this message because ActiveX is trying to create a control that is not registered or is corrupt or missing, probably deleted when you uninstalled. I searched the MS Knowledgebase for "error 429 activex" and got 25 hits - each relatiung to different programs. You might want to check it out - www.microsoft.com - click on support/knowledge base and go from there.

Once you determine WHICH control is missing, you may be able to reinstall it individually.

HTH,

Vic

Hi Vic,

Thanks for the reply and reason for the error.

I did search the MS KB myself but much of the answers were double-dutch to me <g>, I hoped that someone here may have had a similar problem and been able to say 'yes, this file is missing or corrupt, replace it from CABxx on the Windoze CD.'

The problem is I have no idea which control is missing.

I will try a reinstall of the PSS Airbus see if that rectifies the situation, if not a flatten and reinstall of Win & FS; I want to move FS to another drive anyway and I am off work this week so it will give me something to do !!!

Thanks for your input.

After doing a complete wipe & reinstall of Win98SE & FS I no longer get the ActiveX error.
Doing some testing along the way I *think* some or all of VB5 files were missing as these were installed along the way, along with VB6 files.
As I had reinstalled VB6 runtime and that did not cure the problem I can only assume that VB5 caused the problem.
