"Sat Flight 08-30-03"

Greetings!

Here are a few points of reference for future flight operations. These are not intended to be all-inclusive.

Everyone enjoyed a nice flight. We had one in left closed traffic, a couple of helicopters and inbound traffic from the southeast. Everyone seems to be getting the hang of it, so I don't have many comments. Well done!

- It's often helpful to give your callsign as "Skylane XYZ," "Caravan XYZ" or "Skyhawk XYZ" rather than just Cessna XYZ. If you just say "Cessna XYZ," ATC will usually assume you're in a 172 or 152, but if you're in something faster (e.g. Caravan or Skylane), it'll help ATC with spacing if you're most specfic about what you're flying.

- After the initial call to ATC, you only have to use "Cessna XYZ" (with XYZ being the LAST three digits of your N number) on follow up calls. Subsequent responses to ATC need only be the last three digits. What is meant by the last three digits is if your N number is 700TB, your initial calls would be "Cessna seven zero zero tango bravo". Subsequent calls would be "Cessna zero tango bravo," and responses to all clearances and instructions after the initial call would just be "zero tango bravo."

- Please listen before speaking on the radio. Only one of us can talk at a time. If you hear ATC issue a clearance, wait for the reply before speaking. You know whom ever has been issued a clearance will respond, so please wait for it. The same goes for when a pilot makes a request. ATC will respond, so please wait for it before speaking. Otherwise you'll just step on the other person's transmission and further delay communications.

- We have a radio communications for pattern operations tutorial for KSBP in the Premiere issue of FlightAdventures Magazine named "Air Traffic Control (ATC) for Simulator Pilots"

- The size of the traffic pattern for light singles is about ½ mile from the runway on downwind. There are two ways you can eyeball your distance: The runway at KSBP is about a mile long, so you want to be about ½ a runway length on your downwind leg. The other way is to use the strut (or wing on a low wing airplane) as a reference. ½ mile will bisect the strut (or wing) by about ½ to 2/3's. We have some pictures of what this looks like in our books, but I'm not sure if we have an online version. If I find one, I'll post a link.

That's all. See you next time!
- It's often helpful to give your callsign as "Skylane XYZ," "Caravan XYZ" or "Skyhawk XYZ" rather than just

Ben
