"Active Sky for real weather"
12-21-02, 17:31z

Hi all,

I wonder if somebody can give me some advice as to the use of ActiveSky 2002 from Damian Clark which I installed for use with FS2002 today. It works great if I start FS2002 first, then connect to the web using my modem connection and then start ActiveSky. However, I do not want to stay on line throughout complete flights. I understand from the readme file provided that I can force an airport ICAO ID to be my destination airport. I guess if I fly into the destination area then, even when offline the weather is adjusted correctly (not sure about that yet). I have to try some more.

What I miss is a feature where I can pre-program some locations on my route and have ActiveSky get all those weather stations upfront in one online pass. Or get a complete METAR text file from the web and then have ActiveSky use those data. Is there a way to accomplish anything like that with ActiveSky? (I had RealWeather back with FS98 but did not want to go through the complex install process with RealWeather for FS2002, and pay for WinBatch..).

Other than that, I wish a good holiday season and Merry Christmas to everyone!

Regards,
Detlef

Hi Detlef,

I have the latest version ActiveSkywxRE, it may be slightly different in operation from the free version.

There is an option to down load a single file from the 'Net and use that for your flight, this is similar to FSMeteo's 'Get weather and stay off line'.

AFAIK this down loads all the weather for all areas so as you approach your destination the weather will change to that of the destination. The only thing you will not get is current weather because you are not connected to the 'Net.

If you go to the options, the top of the page has 2 'operations' 'Online/live' and 'Offline/Preset', select 'Offline/Preset'.
I am not sure if you have to hit the 'Auto-download and create new' button to create this world wide weather file or if the 'offline' option does it automatically.

Have a look at the help file for instructions to help with this and sorry if the free version of ActiveSky does not have these options.

I use ActiveSky in online mode which is why I can't give you definite instructions, sorry.

HTH

A Merry Christmas to you and yours and to everyone at flightadventures.

Hi Detlef,

I am also using Active Sky, free version and like the
weather but don't like staying connected.

Vulcan is right, the new version (payware) has the
offline feature. Saw it on avsim.com about a month ago.
The name is active sky WE/re (check the name in Vulcan's
msg.)

I'll probably fork over the credit card and buy the new
version as soon as I get over grumbling about paying.

Alan

Hi Alan and Vulcan,

just after I had posted my question here I went to http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ and read about the payware version ActiveSkywxRE. The price (was it 14.95 USD?) looks reasonable enough. And I downloaded the documentation. It seems the freeware version does not have the offline feature. I'll probably go ahead soon and buy, if I don't find something else that works for me.

Thanks for your help
Merry Christmas!

Detlef
