Hi All

Can someone out there with a winXP equipped PC do me a favour please?

FSNav has a peculiar file naming convention for downloaded sids and stars and I wanted to find out which of the sid/star files was for Gatwick. I knew that I'd written some of them so I did a search, using the winXP file manager (explorer?), for the word 'croft' in any file in the sid/star folder. The search came up with a big fat nothing. This surprised me so I then opened one of the files, checked the data therein, closed the file and ran a search on data I now knew was present in one of the files.

Guess what? winXP failed to identify the file, again reporting nothing found in the folder.

I then did a search on this folder from a networked PC which has win98SE as the OS and it found the files containing my name almost immediately.

I then ran a few more searches with the winXP PC for text contained within other files - *.doc files amongst them - and winXP appears to fail to identify any files that have non-text file type extensions, e.g. *.flt, *.ss, etc.

If you have a winXP PC would you do a quick search in the file manager for text you know to be in a file and see if the OS identifies the file? *.FLT files are just text files in the FS02 flights folder. Open one with a text editor, copy any text you like from here and then paste it into the search box and see what happens.

Do you have the same problem too or is this just peculiar to my setup?

Hi Paul

I've tried 2 routes. One was a lot quicker than the other, but they both found 6 files:
wpNavAID
wpNavFIX
wpNavRTE
AIRWAY
ICAO
ISEC
All are in FS2002; the first 3 are in FMCWP\navdata; the others are in MODULES\FSNavigator. They all come up because of placenames, so they are not the ones you are seeking.

I used uppercase for the first letter. Also, I noticed that the search doesn't look in hidden files.

Thanks Frank. However, those 6 files you found are all *.txt files and my PC finds them too.

The problem appears to be that the OS only looks in files which have 'normal' text file extensions, eg, txt, doc, xls, etc.

If the file being searched for does not have such an extension, eg FSNav sid/star files are all *.SS, flight files are *.FLT, the OS appears to disregard them and so not look in them. I've turned on all the options I can think of to try and force the OS to search them to no avail. win98, and all previous OSs that I've used (to the best of my knowledge) look in all files by default.

Hi Paul,

I had the same problem but it did used to work with Win Me. Maybe the patch for XP will fix it because there is clearly a problem with those type of files.

Thanks for that Ray. Glad to know it's not just me. Also glad to know that I can still do a search using the old win98 PC. There's times I lose files and can remember what's in them but have no idea what they're called. This search facility is essential. What on earth was MS thinking of???

Paul -

There's a shareware utility called Search 'n Replace by FunDuc Software that I find INVALUABLE! It can search binaries, text - you name it. Regex searches or normal, exact case, etc. It will also replace in those files if you wish.

The shareware version is limited to only displaying the first 5 hits but it's worth looking at.
If you don't do many searches, the limit is not relevant.

Hi Paul/Ray,

Sorry to disappoint you both but on all my XP machines file search will find ANY file I tell it to. The search facility in XP ask's you what kind of file to search for, click on all files and away ya go <S>. Have either of you ever updated via the Auto Update feature in XP??

BTDT but it won't on mine. Is this a difference between XP Home and XP Prop? I've just opened a *.FLT file in notepad, copied a part of the text, asked for a search on the word or phrase in the appropriate folder, selected all files and folders and got absolutely zilch.

Greenie would be able to answer this one better :-) but XP Pro gives more control over a network etc.
I've just tried Windows Explorer again and the three files I changed the other day it couldn't relocate them this time around??

I tend to use Powerdesk by Ontrack as I find it far superior to MS's WE!

So obviously WE has a glitch in it's search engine <G>

I'd call this more than a glitch - it's a major cock-up. Ho hum, just as well I can fall back on win98SE when needed. Two steps forward and one back again I fear.

What James said about networking is correct. Pro gives an administrator *much* more control over networking (connections, file access, etc). Some other features not found in the home edition:

--IIS software (web server)
--Support for multi processor machines
--Remote Desktop server
--Automated System Recovery (like backup)
--Many security enhancements to go along with the networking mentioned above.

This list is off the top of my head, and I'm sure there is much more, but either I don't know, or can't remember <g>. Hope this helps.

I only have two computers networked together and, for my purposes, the networking capabilities of XP Home version are enough for me, but thanks for the heads up.

Were you searching for specific content, or just looking for the files? I think Paul and Ray are referring to looking for files *containing* some specific text.

In the Win98 Search you can even find binary files like EXEs and DLLs with specific content. Very useful, especially for programmers like me who are investigating things like new versions of FS. <G>.

I searched the MS Knowledge base and found an article that covers this problem. Take a look at No Q309173.

It's a dog's dinner compared to Win9x/Me search and why on earth MS didn't include this in the default OS is beyond me.

B****y hell. What a dog's dinner. As far as I can see, even if I *do* download what they suggest the search still isn't going to return a file if it has an extension that MS doesn't recognise as, e.g., in FSNav's sid/star files (with their ss extensions) unless I go to the trouble of editing the registry just o include unusual file types. Think I'll just do the search from the win98 PC when I need something remotely different. And they call this progress????

I thought you'd be *impressed*! As you say, it's appalling that such a common utility has been broken in what is meant to be a quality OS.

I won't be editing the registry because as you say there's no way to search SS files.

I want a refund!

Just as a follow up - I found this:

Haven't yet tried it on XP but it I've heard it works well. Best of all , it's free.
